04/02/12Press Release: the Sentinel Project
Christchurch Cathedral launches The Sentinel Project by Irish Artist Sean Campbell February 9th.2012
Sub Heading: Monumental contemporary sculpture with a core of glass and skin of Lego will be juxtaposed against 6 centuries of ornate brass and ancient tombs in the Cathedral Crypt and Treasury. The installation is opened by Dr. Audrey Whitty Curator - Ceramics, Glass & Asian collections at National Museum of Ireland at 7pm, February 9th and runs until March 4th.
Sean Campbell won the Robinson McIlwaine Architects Original Vision Prize at the 130th RUA, Annual Exhibition, Ulster Museum in 2011 for Sentinel (Belfast, Lego). He brings that work and new pieces together as an installation responding to the architecture, people and artefacts at Christchurch Cathedral. Physically based on standing stones each sculpture is anchored in the creative spirit of childhood combined with the wisdom of geological time. Operating on multiple levels of meaning and open to interpretation the Sentinels offer the visitor the chance to reflect in an increasingly complex world.
