As part of the annual Irish Festival in China we are pleased to announce that Irish Wave 2016
will take place in Beijing and Shanghai during March 2016.
This year, a series of contemporary art exhibitions and events will focus on themes of
nationhood and cultural identity as part of Irish Wave’s mission to promote multicultural artistic
exchanges. The starting point is the Easter Rising which took place in Dublin in 1916. Speaking
in her role as co-curator of the project, Northern Irish artist Gail Ritchie said:
“This project is unique as it looks at the Irish Rebellion through many varied
perspectives and sets it within the context of the World War One. This is an important
approach as it allows artists from across the globe to respond to these important
events”
The Easter Rising , with its aim of forming a nation state finds echoes around the world.
Weiming Lee, the Shanghai co-curator went on to say “China has its own history of occupation
and war. Bringing artists from all over the world to exhibit their work alongside Chinese artists
makes for a very provocative and stimulating exhibition”
London based Irish artist Fion Gunn who founded IRISH WAVE in 2010 and Beijing based Irish
artist Niamh Cunningham have been co curating the project for a number of years and are
interested in presenting exhibitions which are atypical explorations of East-West relationships.
This year, they have expanded the selection of artists to include those from not only Ireland and
Northern Ireland but also China, Taiwan, UK, USA and Australia.
Describing her response to the project, Beijing co-curator Ning Zhang whose gallery is hosting
one of the exhibitions said “IRISH WAVE 2016: BIRTH OF A NATION is an art exhibition in
which each artist from China and other countries explores the state and the meaning of his or
her life through contemporary art. It opens communication and dialogue and gives the real
sense of a culture and art exchange program.”
Irish Wave 2016 continues to explore how diverse cultures and ethnic groups can learn to
coexist in a more peaceful and tolerant way through the presentation of contemporary art. The
artists and curators look forward to welcoming you to NING SPACE, 798, Beijing, from 12 March
and the Sanwei Art Center, Shanghai from 19 March.
